'Non-System disk or disk error' on new Ecne install
I just tried to install Trisquel 12 "Ecne" on an old HP laptop (Windows 7 era). I ran all the verification and authentication processes on the .iso I downloaded, as recommended in the documentation pages. I booted into a live session just fine, and the install process appeared to work. But after shutting down, removing the USB and rebooting, all I get is a black screen with the error message;
> "Non-System disk or disk error"
> "replace and strike any key when ready"
I can't seem to find the "any" key on my keyboard :P
Dad Jokes aside, I presume there is some problem with the boot sector or something? What's the best way to troubleshoot this?
From past experience, you may need to select EFI in your boot menu. Usually accessed by pressing F10 (or F2, but you will probably know already - just not the any key).
The boot menu (F9 in this case) only gives me 3 options;
1) Notebook Upgrade Bay
2) Notebook Hard Drive
3) Notebook Ethernet
When I select option 2), it kicks me straight to option 3), which obviously fails. In case the next suggestion involves altering BIOS settings, that's not currently an option. My brother gave me this laptop last year, after buying it 2nd hand about 5 years ago. It appears that a previous owner set a BIOS passphrase, and didn't think to remove it before selling it on.
The device is an HP EliteBook 2540p, product number VB81AV. I got this information from a System Information menu, which I can access along with the boot menu, by pressing Esc during boot. There's much more information there, in case any of that might be helpful.
Anyone got any suggestions for how I might proceed?
